Lectionary Readings

At Asbury United Methodist Church, our worship and study are grounded in the Revised Common Lectionary. This is a three-year cycle of weekly scripture readings used by many Christian denominations around the world. By following the lectionary, we ensure that our congregation hears the "whole counsel of God," journeying through the breadth of the Bible together over the course of three years.

WHY WE USE THE LECTIONARY

  • Unity: It connects us with the global Church, as millions of Christians study and reflect on the same scriptures each Sunday.
  • Balance: It prevents us from only focusing on our favorite passages, challenging us to engage with difficult texts and a wider variety of biblical themes.
  • The Church Year: The readings follow the liturgical seasons—such as Advent, Epiphany, Lent, and Pentecost—helping us live out the story of Jesus throughout the entire year.
